Year 1 marks the transition between the Foundation Stage curriculum and a slightly more 'formal' style of schooling. However, the change is a gradual one and we work hard to ensure that each pupil is following a programme of work that meets their individual needs.
There is still a good deal of role-play and creative learning taking place during each day, in addition to literacy, numeracy and other learning tasks. A cross-curricular approach is adopted to give added relevance and meaning to learning and there is still strong emphasis on making learning an enjoyable experience. The curriculum is supplemented with a rich and varied diet of educational visits and visitors.
The class benefits from the input of specialist staff who help to deliver ICT and Music. Year 1 is also the time when Modern Languages are introduced, with French lessons being integrated into the timetable. As well as P.E. and games, the class also has a weekly swimming session with qualified swimming coaches. The aim is to make them confident in the pool environment and to help them develop into confident swimmers as soon as possible.
Parent helpers are always welcome in class and there are many ways in which parents contribute: with swimming, baking, hearing readers, accompanying visits or just as 'another pair of hands'.
